Emergency Allert From Twitter

A new service from Twitter allow government agencies and non governmental organizations to send emergency messages directly to mobile users during times of crisis or natural disaster , it was announced on Wednesday .
Users who sign up for this service will receive a named Twitter Alerts "
critical information " via text message or push notification when an organization marking tweets as "allert" according to the website Twitter Alerts .
" Twitter Alerts brings us one step closer to helping users get important and accurate information from credible organizations during emergencies , natural disasters or other times when communication services are not accessible , " Gaby Peña , a product manager at Twitter , said on the company blog dimmana service announced .
More than 60 organizations have signed up to the new system , including emergency management department Louisiana , Florida , New York and Colorado as well as the American Red Cross and FEMA , said on Twitter . International organizations like the World Health Organization and the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department has signed up .
Users can customize the organization where they receive service alerts through the setup menu .
